Hybrid Solution for Agriculture: Solar, battery, and grid

Energy on the farm

Agriculture has unique energy needs with seasonal variations and often varying access to the power grid. A hybrid solution can provide a stable power supply, reduce costs, and contribute to a sustainable operation.

Typical installation

A farm can combine solar panels on the roof of the farm building with a BESS to power the milking robot, ventilation, drying equipment, and other machinery. The battery ensures operation in the event of a power outage and reduces power peaks when heavy machinery starts up.

With the right sizing, the farm can become almost self-sufficient in electricity during the summer months and achieve significant self-consumption even during winter.

Financial benefits

Agriculture often has favourable conditions for solar energy: large roof areas, good orientation, and high daytime consumption. In addition, surplus electricity can be sold to the grid. The payback period for a complete hybrid solution is normally 5–7 years for farms.
